Caution urged for drivers in Lahaina pali tunnel

LAHAINA >> State transportation officials are advising Maui motorists to exercise caution when traveling through the Lahaina pali tunnel starting tomorrow night because of a construction project.

One of the two lanes on Honoapiilani Highway will be closed at the tunnel from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Sundays through Thursdays.

The $880,000 project, awarded to Site Engineering Inc., is expected to be completed in several weeks, said highways construction engineer Athan Adachi. Adachi said the work includes the resurfacing of walls and the installation of tunnel lighting.

3 live grenades found in Big Isle school garden

WAIMEA, Hawaii >> Army experts have found and removed three live, World War II-era grenades at a garden at Waimea Middle School on the Big Island, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced.

Army contractors used the current spring break to survey the garden. A live grenade was found at the garden on Feb. 5, and the garden was closed.

Besides the three live grenades, contractors located an inert piece of another grenade and seven bullets, all below ground, the corps said. Explosive experts from Pohakuloa Training Area disposed of the live ammunition.

The school is in a World War II training location called the Waikoloa Maneuver Area.

The survey of the school grounds for ammunition was to conclude yesterday, but the Army urged anyone discovering more ammunition to notify police.

U.S. Rep. Patsy Mink (D-Rural Oahu, Neighbor Islands) said the funds are intended to improve monitoring of water quality and for notifying the public of beach warnings and closings.

The count is sponsored by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary.
