A search committee to find a replacement for retiring Hawaii athletic director Hugh Yoshida has been formed, UH spokesman Paul Costello said yesterday. Hawaii forms search

of the committee members MondayBy Dave Reardon
dreardon@starbulletin.com"They'll tentatively hold their first meeting on Tuesday," Costello said.
Costello said the names of the committee members will be released Monday. They represent "a wide range," including community members, students, faculty, administration and athletic supporters, he said. The committee has about 10 to 12 members, he added.
UH president Evan Dobelle has said he wants to find Yoshida's replacement by July. Yoshida's retirement was announced last month; he leaves the post at the end of December.
Dobelle also said he wants to increase the pay for the job from $130,000 per year to $180,000, which is close to the nationwide average for similar jobs.
Former Hawaii and Arizona football coach Dick Tomey is widely considered a top candidate to replace Yoshida.
Tomey, who spent last season doing color commentary for UH football telecasts, said yesterday he is not ruling out applying for the job. But he declined further comment.
"I'm really not at liberty to discuss it," Tomey said. "At this point, any information about the process should come from the university."
In other athletic administration news, Yoshida said a system-wide hiring freeze probably won't delay replacing assistant women's basketball coach Jon Newlee, who left to be head coach at Idaho State.
"We need to get approval, a waiver," he said. "But it's a cooperative situation."
