Burbidgea nabawanensis comes from Borneo, and its compact size and shade-tolerant nature make it an ideal indoor plant.
It has shiny, dark green leaves, and the flower stems are dark red. The flowers are thumb-sized and resemble the shape of white ginger but the color is reddish and orange-yellow.
The plant, in a 4-inch pot, will be $7 at the sale, available through Ken Vinzant of Olomana Tropicals.
Other unusual plants for sale include a begonia cultivated at the arboretum. The begonia resembles a fern with tiny pale flowers.
The sale will be held 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 6 at the Blaisdell Center. The popular jams and jellies made by the arboretum volunteers will not be available this year, but thousands of plants from 35 nurseries, handmade leis and crafts, books and keiki activities will be offered.
