Roosevelt got power from an unexpected source and a resilient pitching performance from its ace to beat Kaiser 11-4 in an Oahu Interscholastic Association Eastern Division baseball game yesterday in Hawaii Kai.

Brandon Loo, who bats seventh in the Rough Riders' lineup, hit two home runs to lead Roosevelt's offensive attack in the season opener for both teams.

On the mound, Chris Mols recovered from a shaky start to strike out 10 batters over six innings and earn the win.

"My changeup worked and I just went off of that," said Mols, a senior left-hander. "I was doing good with my fastball, the changeup was making them swing and when it came to two strikes I was trying to throw my curve."

Mols struggled with his command in the second inning as Kaiser rallied for four runs on three hits. But he settled down and allowed just two singles over the next four innings.

"His ball was a little up that's why they were hitting him," Roosevelt coach Kerry Higa said. "It was good that he kept battling. His mind is strong so he doesn't get flustered or discouraged."

Kaiser's second inning outburst erased Roosevelt's early 3-0 lead. But the Rough Riders needed just two pitches in the top of the fourth to reclaim the advantage.

Matthew Terukina led off the inning with a triple to left field. Loo then drilled the next offering over the right-field fence to give Roosevelt a 5-4 lead.

Mols almost hit a grand slam later in the inning but his fly ball to right bounced off the top of the fence and back into play. He settled for a two-run double.

Loo struck again in the seventh with an inside-the-park homer to left field.

"They're confident they can score so when they get behind they don't lose momentum, they still play with composure," Higa said.

Kaiser starter Jason Peters struck out five over six innings and took the loss. The Cougars were hampered by six errors.

"Jason pitched well, but he didn't get his defensive support," Kaiser coach Duke Chinen said. "Too many times we had situations where we should have gotten out of the inning."
