Iolani sophomore Derrick Low has been named Hawaii's Gatorade State High School Boys' Basketball Player of the Year.

Low led the Raiders to the state championship last month and was the Interscholastic League of Honolulu's player of the year.

"I've been coaching in this state for 20 years. Derrick is the best player this state has ever produced," Iolani coach Mark Mugiishi said.

Low averaged 15.5 points, six rebounds, five assists and three steals

Punahou's Becky Hogue is the Girls' Basketball Player of the Year. Hogue averaged 15 points and 10 rebounds in the Buffanblu's first nine preseason games.

One boy and one girl basketball player from each state and the District of Columbia are honored by Gatorade.

National winners for the boys and girls will be announced early next month.

Iolani graduate wins wrestling title

Southern Colorado's Vail Minn, an Iolani graduate and former Interscholastic League of Honolulu wrestling champion, won the 157-pound title March 16 at the National Collegiate Wrestling Association national championships in Easton, Penn.

The NCWA sponsors the nation's 69 affiliated college club teams.

Minn was a former NCAA Division II national qualifier and had wrestled on a team that won a conference title. But Southern Colorado's wrestling program was dropped as an official sport in the spring of 2001.

Without official competition, Minn spent most of his season simply working out with teammates. But Minn won five matches in the NCWA Tournament, capped off by a 3-2 win over Nevada's Andy Toulouse in the final for the national title.

Moanalua graduate Chris Rufo earned All-America status at the NCAA Division II national championships to help North Dakota State to a national runner-up team finish.

Rufo dropped his first match, then wrestled back to fourth place in the 189-pound bracket.

Rufo and Minn are both seniors, ending their collegiate eligibility.
