Partners in Time pleases
isle fans of folk/jazz fusion

PEOPLE who attended the all-day music sessions at Kapono's in the Aloha Tower Marketplace over the weekend got their money's worth, with every type of music you could think of represented. You only got to see the multi-talented group with the clever name Partners in Time for half an hour, but a number of fans heard the folk/jazz fusion group performing for a couple of hours the other night at the Atherton Performing Arts Studio on Kaheka St., across from Daiei, or last night at the Coffee Factory at King & Keeaumoku. The group plays the music of Armenia, Turkey, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Greece and the Middle East, and thanks to the annual March visit here of New York Armenian jazz clarinetist Souren Baronian, some of the best jazz you're likely to hear. Baronian, who is 72 but looks 20 years younger, plays clarinet either in Middle East or Benny Goodman style. Catch them if you can ...

SPEAKING of jazz, John Kolivas has rebooked his Honolulu Jazz Quartet into Kapono's on April 8 ... Or, if you're more into ethnic music, Green Island will perform Irish music Sunday at Kelly O'Neil's on Lewers Street, and will open itself up to anyone wanting to play Irish music ... And Irish fiddler Lisa Gomes has been booked at Ferguson's Pub in the Dillingham Transportation Building on April 5th and 19th. Lisa was the fiddler for Irish Hearts. The Irish group disbanded but is getting together April 13 for a final farewell. It's a concert at O'Toole's Pub, a fund-raiser for Kellie, the 11-year-old daughter of Pub waitress Laurie Dinwiddie. She went into a coma following a car accident just before New Year's and has only come out recently. Mom has been by her side ever since and will benefit from the final Irish Hearts concert to help defray medical bills ...

Ho down

LOCAL singer Keith Haugen was trying to book himself into a casino in his native northern Minnesota as Cordell, his country music alter ego. The booker told him that another act from Hawaii would be performing there then: "You ever heard of Don Ho?" the man asked. Haugen deadpanned, "That's odd -- he hasn't mentioned it to me." He then relented and let the guy know that everyone in Hawaii knows who Don Ho is. He came away with the idea the booker would rather have a luau show with him and wife Carmen performing, though he hopes to land a Cordell country date in the future, since they feature many C & W performers there ...

WE kidded Don Murphy about all the money he took in on St. Patrick's Day, and he mentioned what went into the daylong party. For example, Murphy revealed he employed 41 bartenders! They must have pulled a lot of spouts ...

Learning through music

PLAYWRIGHT Lisa Matsumoto and composer/lyricist Roslyn have lined up some interesting sponsors to bankroll their educational touring shows, "In the Clear Blue Sea" and "Wings of the Islands." Backing the shows that'll tour in May are the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, Tesoro Hawaii, the Department of Health -- Clean Water Branch, Hawaiian Airlines, the Fred Baldwin Memorial Foundation and the James and Abigail Campbell Foundation ...
