Their junior college coach says Mark Campbell and Michael Kuebler are alike in some ways. Campbells former
teammate may visitKuebler played with the Rainbows'
guard at Clackamas C.C. 2 seasons agoBy Dave Reardon
dreardon@starbulletin.comOne way they're not is that Kuebler likes to shoot the ball. He led Clackamas (Ore.) Community College with 22.4 points per game this past season.
Kuebler, a 6-foot-5 combination guard who was his league's MVP, might be visiting Hawaii after the Final Four as a recruit. Montana State, Furman, Kansas State, Northern Iowa and Cal State Northridge have also shown interest.
Kuebler and Campbell were teammates two seasons ago at Clackamas.
"They're similar in the kind of kids they are," said Cliff Wegner, the coach at Clackamas. "Their upside is very high, they're both going to get better and their physical maturity is still ahead of them."
But while Campbell is more of a pass-first point guard, Kuebler possesses a scorer's mentality. Not that he's a ballhog -- Kuebler averaged 4.6 assists for Clackamas.
"He also got the toughest defensive assignment each game," Wegner said.
The coach said Campbell and Kuebler were good friends as teammates two years ago, when the team went 28-5.
"They really enjoyed playing together," Wegner said.
The Cougars went 27-6 last year.
The Rainbows are lining up their recruiting visits today. The coaches then leave for the Final Four tomorrow, and they'll begin hosting potential new players after they return next week.
Letter of intent day is April 10, but in recent years, UH has signed most of its players afterward.
The Rainbows have four scholarships to give. They lose three seniors: guards Predrag Savovic and Mike McIntyre and forward Mindaugas Burneika.
