Lawmakers took time out yesterday to honor the Hawaii basketball team for its record-breaking season. Hawaii lawmakers
honor RainbowsBoth the House and the Senate introduced resolutions honoring the team for its 27-6 season that ended two weeks ago in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
Coach Riley Wallace, along with several members of the team, were on hand to receive lei and proclamations from lawmakers.
The Rainbows finished the season with a school-record 27 victories and a share of the Western Athletic Conference regular-season title.
Hawaii also won the WAC tournament and earned a No. 10 seed in the NCAA Tournament before losing to seventh-seeded Xavier, 70-58, in the opening round of the West Regional.
Warriors drop a spot in volleyball poll
Hawaii dropped from third to fourth in the Volleyball magazine poll released yesterday.The Warriors (15-6) fell behind BYU (17-5) after losing twice in a row to No. 2 Pepperdine on the road. UCLA stayed in the top spot.
Hawaii hosts No. 8 UC Irvine to begin a homestand Friday.
Seasiders split with Eastern Oregon
Brigham Young-Hawaii split a softball doubleheader with Eastern Oregon yesterday, winning the first game, 4-3, in eight innings but dropping the second, 8-0, in six innings at Laie.The Seasiders (8-15) won the first game despite being outhit, 6-4, by the Mountaineers. BYUH won in the eighth when Michelle Gibson walked, was sacrificed to second, moved to third on a balk and scored on a wild pitch.
The Mountaineers broke open the second game with seven unearned runs on three BYUH errors in the third inning.
Omori nominated for Player of the Week
Senior first baseman Gregg Omori and junior pitcher Chris George were nominated for the Western Athletic Conference's pitcher and player of the week, respectively, for March 18-24.Neither Rainbow grabbed the honor though, as Rice's Eric Arnold was the player of the week and Bob Runyon of Fresno State was judged the best pitcher.
Hawaii boxers to compete at nationals
Hawaii will send a full team to the U.S. men's boxing championships at Caesers Palace in Las Vegas, April 1-7.The team consists of Kini Sofa Jr. at 112 pounds, Dat Nguyen (125), Shirrod Victoria (132), Travis Tandal (139), Brent Rodrigues (147), Tyson Lee (156), Shawn Murphy (165), Kaleo Padilla (178) and Ali Burgess (201).
Other Hawaii Boxers fighting in the event are Samson Guillermo and Van Oscar Penovaroff, representing Northern Michigan University, and Mike Keopuhiwa, representing the U.S. Army.
All expenses are paid for by Caesars Palace.
Hawaii-Hilo women triumph in Florida
Hawaii-Hilo opened a women's tennis trip through Florida with a 5-1 win over Florida Gulf Coast University at Fort Myers yesterday.The Vulcans swept the doubles competitions and got singles victories by Nathalia Jung and Krystal Hangtai to end the match.
Jung swept Maria Nieto, 6-0, 6-0, and Hangai outlasted Diana Murillo, 6-4, 6-3.
Lara Hornbuckle lost Hilo's only match.
Fitzgerald named WAC's athlete of week
Hawaii's Lauren Fitzgerald won four of five matches last week to win the Western Athletic Conference's tennis player of the week award.Fitzgerald beat the top players from Iowa State and Oklahoma and beat Murray State and Clemson's second best players.
Her only loss was to the nation's 34th-ranked player from Washington State.
Fitzgerald will play next April 12 against Nevada.
Wahine sweep pair after tournament
A day after its invitational tournament, Hawaii swept a softball doubleheader against two teams yesterday at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.The Wahine beat Northwestern, 6-2, before taking care of Hofstra, 3-1.
Sheri Oronoz won the first game by scattering seven hits, and Shannon Tabion took the second game by limiting the Pride to four hits and three walks.
