Oronoz holds off
Hofstra for Hawaii win


Kate Judd drove in three runs and Sheri Oronoz snuffed out a late rally to help Hawaii beat Hofstra 5-3 in the Hawaii Invitational Softball Tournament at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium yesterday.

Oronoz took a 5-0 lead into the bottom of the seventh before Hofstra catcher Meaghan Almon hit a three run homer off her. She allowed the next batter to single but got Lisa Torres to ground back to her to end the game.

Trisha Ramos was 1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI for Hawaii while Nathalie Gonzales, Stacie Hirano, April Crowell and Jennifer Tanderich also had hits.

Hawaii improved to 21-14 while Hofstra fell to 7-16.

Vulcans come back on Silverswords: Chaminade and Hawaii-Hilo split a doubleheader at Palolo field yesterday, with the Silverswords winning the first game 6-5 in 10 innings and losing the second 7-4.

Chaminade won the first game when Jillian Umeda stroked a single to right field to score Loihi McKeague.

More Hawaiian Islanders to hit the QB Club

Avion Weaver and Darnell Arceneaux of the Hawaiian Islanders will appear at the Honolulu Quarterback Club's meeting at the Pagoda Hotel tomorrow.

Joining them will be UH quarterback coach Dan Morrison and golf coach Marga Stubblefield.

UH Associate Professor of Kinesiology and Leisure Science Dr. Dennis Chai will also be on hand to talk about child obesity in Hawaii.

Lunch is served at 11:30 and the program begins at noon.

Fite named Kauai Lagoons teaching pro

The Kauai Lagoons Golf Club has named Rich Fite its new teaching professional.

Fite, who has more than 20 years of teaching and management experience in the field of golf, was a teaching pro at the Black Mountain Country Club in Nevada. He has been recognized as Professional of the Year by the Las Vegas Chapter of the Southwest PGA Section and the Southern Nevada Golf Association.

OJGA schedules PATs

The Oahu Junior Golf Association will hold Playing Ability Tests (PATs) on April 14 for youngsters ages 13-17, and on April 24 for 7-12 year-olds.

King on Golf Channel

Jerry King, head teaching professional of the Kapalua Golf Academy, will make an appearance on The Golf Channel's "Golf Academy Live" on Tuesday at 1 p.m. Hawaii time.

This is King's third visit on "Golf Academy Live."

The nationally televised show places the instructors in the "hot seat" with live telephone calls from the public audience.

King is instrumental in opening a state of the art practice facility at Kapalua. He is responsible for managing, staffing and budgeting for the Kapalua Golf Academy.

King has won the Aloha Section PGA Teacher of the Year Award four times (1996, 1998, 1999, 2000).
