Musashimaru clinches
10th tournament victory
at spring sumo

OSAKA, Japan (AP) >> Yokozuna (grand champion) Musashimaru overpowered ozeki (champion) Chiyotaikai to win the Emperor's Cup Saturday, with one day remaining in the 15-day Spring Grand Sumo Tournament.

It was the Hawaii grand champion's 10th career tournament victory.

In the day's final bout at the Osaka Prefectural Gymnasium, Musashimaru, or Fiamalu Penitani of Hawaii, easily brushed off a flurry of hand thrusts before he slapped Chiyotaikai down near the center of the ring.

Musashimaru has encountered little trouble en route to a 13-1 record heading into the final day of the tournament. Chiyotaikai fell to 7-7.

"I have been able to anticipate (my) opponents' movements without any trouble in this tournament," Musashimaru said in a nationally televised interview after his victory.

In other major bouts, ozeki Kaio aggressively charged fellow ozeki Tochiazuma, pushing and pulling him down for his 11th victory against three defeats. Tochiazuma is 9-5.

Sekiwake (junior champion) Asashoryu forced out Aminishiki with a flurry of thrusts to give both wrestlers a record of 10-4.

No. 11 maegashira (senior wrestler) Takanowaka was forced out by sekiwake Kotomitsuki. Takanowaka fell to 10-4 while Kotomitsuki is 8-6.

No. 2 maegashira Kyokutenho, or Mongolian Tsevegynyam Nyamjav, tossed out No. 7 maegashira Tamakasuga with an overhand throw for his fifth win against nine defeats. Tamakasuga is 7-7.

No. 3 maegashira Kyokushuzan, or Mongolian Batbayar Davaa, was driven out of the ring by No. 11 maegashira Hamanishiki for his 13th loss against one win. Hamanishiki is 6-8.
