for Buffanblu

In a game more competitive than indicated by its final margin, Punahou shook off a feisty Iolani team for a 45-22 Interscholastic League of Honolulu girls basketball victory last night at Iolani Gym.

The Buffanblu improved to 3-0 in the ILH. Iolani fell to 1-2.

Punahou's Rachel Kane led all scorers with 15 points, while Becky Hogue added 12. Hogue scored eight points in the second half despite being saddled with foul trouble.

While Kane and Hogue put up the biggest numbers, Punahou coach Mike Taylor praised his reserves for keeping Iolani at bay with Hogue on the sideline.

"Our bench stepped it up," Taylor said. "(Kristen) LaVine came in and sparked us with pure hustle."

Megan Abbott came off the bench to score six points in the second half for Punahou.

Iolani, playing without injured point guard Trisha Nishimoto, stayed close for the first 20 minutes of the game, but ran out of gas down the stretch.

The Raiders trailed 17-11 at halftime and closed to within one point at 19-18 midway through the third period. But Hogue, who picked up her third foul at the 5:11 mark of the second quarter, scored on a putback to spark a 12-2 run to put Punahou in control.

Iolani cut its deficit to eight points early in the fourth quarter, but Punahou ended the game on a 15-0 run to erase any doubt.

Iolani held the Buffanblu offense in check thanks to tough interior defense led by Ginger Gravelle and Fabriann Gin. But the Raiders struggled to answer Punahou's run on the offensive end in the second half.

"For the first three quarters they played really well," Iolani coach Glenn Takara said. "Then I think we got a little tired."
