Travis Lee assured himself All-American status in wrestling yesterday at the NCAA Championships in Albany, N.Y. Lee earns All-America
honors in freshman yearLee, a freshman at Cornell who starred at St. Louis, lost in the quarterfinals of the 125-pound weight class, but rebounded to split a pair of matches in the wrestleback bracket.
Lee faces Chris Rodrigues of North Carolina this morning for seventh place. The top eight wrestlers are honored as All-Americans.
Todd Los Banos, Lee's coach at St. Louis who is also at the championships, said Cornell informed him that Lee is the school's first freshman All-American.
Lee began the day by losing a 12-9 decision to Oklahoma State's Skyler Holman.
"It was pretty close all the way," said Todd Los Banos, Lee's coach at St. Louis who is with the wrestler in New York. "It came down to a takedown."
Lee beat Edinboro's Shawn Bunch 12-10 in overtime in the back bracket.
"Travis was down 5-2. In the last minute Travis took him down (and he) had to get another takedown," Los Banos said. "In the last 10 seconds, he took him down to tie the match, then won in overtime."
Lee finished the day with a 5-3 loss to Nebraska's Jason Powell, setting up a meeting with Rodrigues.
Wahine split again at softball tournament
The Hawaii softball team split a pair of games at the Hawaii Invitational for the second straight day.The Wahine lost to Northwestern 8-5 and bounced back to beat Nittaidai 4-1.
Sheri Oronoz (12-7) took the loss for UH, giving up six hits and six runs in four innings.
Kate Judd homered for Hawaii, but Erin Janice went deep twice for the Wildcats as part of a 4-for-4 day. Janice scored four times and knocked in four runs.
Stacey Porter was 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs.
Melissa Coogan went the distance for UH in the second game.
BYUH men's tennis keeps on rolling
The top-ranked Brigham Young-Hawaii men's tennis team swept past Idaho in Laie yesterday to improve to 15-0.The Seasiders didn't drop a set in singles, taking all 12.
Wahine lose: The Hawaii Wahine fell 5-2 to Arkansas. Freshman Kimberly Curtis was a bright spot for UH, winning her singles match 6-3, 6-1.
HPU wins twice: The Hawaii Pacific men's and women's teams both beat Hawaii-Hilo. The men won 5-0. The women triumphed 5-1.
