Question: What ever happened to the Haiku woman whose 96 animals were taken from her house on Jan. 11-12 by the Maui Humane Society?

Answer: The society's animal control supervisor, Aimee Anderson, said she has sent the results of her investigation to the prosecutor's office.

Animal control officials found animal feces and urine in rooms in the house at West Lelehuna Place in Haiku, and the animals had a variety of health problems, including sores and heartworms, according to the Humane Society.

Of the 96 animals taken, 89 were destroyed.

Anderson, who found a dog in the hallway killed by other dogs, said homeowner Jean Bermudez has borrowed two dogs from friends to help her get over the loss of her 82 dogs and 14 cats.

Anderson said she is worried about the welfare of the new animals in Bermudez's custody, given the history of care at the house.

Bermudez said she had only one dog and declined further comment.

In an earlier interview, Bermudez said she could not afford to spay her animals, and they began to increase from interbreeding.

Of the seven Bermudez dogs set aside for adoption, the Maui Humane Society has three dogs still waiting for a new home. The phone number is 877-3680.
