OHA Hawaiian registry launches this weekend

A new registry program for Hawaiians kicks off this weekend in Hilo and Honolulu.

The Office of Hawaiian Affairs Hawaiian Registry program was created by the OHA board of trustees in January to replace Operation Ohana, a former program aimed at registration of Hawaiians. The new program will record Hawaiian ancestry for use by native organizations.

Along with serving as a native database, the free program will help individuals, agencies or institutions verify ancestry requirements. Anyone with any amount of Hawaiian ethnicity can register.

Booths will be set up from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today at the Panaewa Homestead Park in Hilo, and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and tomorrow at Kapiolani Park in Honolulu.

For more information, contact OHA at 594-1888. The mailing address is: OHA Hawaiian Registry, 711 Kapiolani Blvd., Honolulu 96813.

H-3 tunnels renamed after former Gov. Burns

Gov. Ben Cayetano renamed the H-3 tunnels after former Gov. John A. Burns last week.

The tunnels honor the late governor and his instrumental role in initiating an additional route to connect Leeward and Windward Oahu.

Under Burns' administration in 1960, the freeway became part of the Eisenhower Interstate and Defense Highway system.

The H-3 freeway was Hawaii's first state project to require a federal environmental impact statement.

Cal Lee will be roasted and toasted

Retiring St. Louis School football coach Cal Lee will be the target of barbs and bravos from his colleagues and friends at a celebrity roast to benefit his grade-school alma mater.

University of Hawaii football coach June Jones and Kahuku High School varsity football coach Siuvaki Livai will participate in the April 19 program. So will First Hawaiian Bank Vice President Tony Guerrero, KFVE sports commentator Jim Leahey and Honolulu Star-Bulletin sportswriter David Reardon.

April 1 is the deadline for reservations for the 6 p.m. banquet at the Sheraton-Waikiki Hotel. Call St. Patrick School, 734-8979.

Of the $150 ticket price, $90 will be tax deductible. The fund-raiser will kick off the $8 million "Legacy for the Millennium" capital improvement campaign at the Kaimuki Catholic school -- where Lee graduated in 1960 -- and the adjoining St. Patrick Church and monastery.
