at NCAA wrestling meetIt's official: St. Louis standout Travis Lee has made the transition from high school to collegiate wrestling quite easy.
Lee, wrestling for Cornell University at the NCAA championships in Albany, N.Y., advanced to the final eight in the 125-pound weight class with a pair of wins yesterday.
Lee, seeded 11th, stuck Oklahoma's No. 6 Matt Ridings in the second round, pinning him with eight seconds left in the match. Lee was ahead 6-5 but refused to play it safe, surprising Ridings with an ankle pick and cradle for the pin. Oklahoma was on top in team points before the upset, and Lee took its lead away.
"I worked my ankle pick in practice the most," Lee said. "I felt like he was tiring when I came up with the pin."
Lee got to the second round by outlasting Matthew Pitts of Chattanooga 6-3. He jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a first period takedown then scored three more with an escape and takedown in the second.
Ridings dealt Lee one of his five losses in Dallas earlier this year, narrowly beating him 8-6.
