Musashimaru
suffers first upsetOSAKA, Japan (AP) -- Hawaii-born yokozuna Musashimaru suffered his first upset defeat to Mongolian Asashoryu, but kept the sole lead at 10-1 on Wednesday with four days left in the 15-day Spring Grand Sumo Tournament.
One victory behind Musashimaru at 9-2 were ozeki Kaio and No. 11 maegashira Takanowaka.
Ozeki Tochiazuma, seeking promotion to sumo's highest rank of yokozuna, won his eighth victory against three defeats along with No. 6 maegashira Aminishiki.
In the day's final bout at the Osaka Prefectural Gymnasium in western Japan, sekiwake Asashoryu, or Mongolian Dolgorsvren Dagvadrj, charged Musashimaru with hand thrusts against the throat and quickly pulled him down for his seventh victory against four defeats.
Kaio drove his fellow ozeki Musoyama to the ring's edge and thrust him down, handing Musoyama his fourth defeat against seven victories.
In other major bouts, Tochiazuma dodged No. 5 maegashira Toki's hand thrusting skillfully and sent him out, leaving Toki at 6-5.
Tochiazuma won the last tournament in January and can be promoted to yokozuna if he wins this tournament.
Takanowaka grabbed No. 9 maegashira Tamanoshima's belt and drove him out, leaving Tamanoshima at 5-6.
Ozeki Chiyotaikai held off sekiwake Kotomitsuki's driving attempt by turning around the ring and thrust him down for his seventh victory against four defeats. Kotomitsuki is 6-5.
Aminishiki fought off No. 13 maegashira Takamisakari's driving attempts at the ring's edge and sent him out, leaving Takamisakari at 6-5.
Kyokushuzan, or Mongolian Batbayar Davaa, suffered his 10th defeat against one victory as komusubi Wakanosato fought off Kyokushuzan's hand thrusting and sent him out.
No. 2 maegashira Kyokutenho, or Mongolian Tsevegynyam Nyamjav, charged No. 4 maegashira Akinoshima with a leg trick and drove him out in one minute, 50 seconds, leaving both wrestlers at 4-7. A sumo match usually ends in 5 to 10 seconds.
