Warriors battle back
for Schwitters’ 800th

Hawaii tennis coach Jim Schwitters will tell you that 800 wins is a testament to longevity. But success is an obvious part of the equation as well.

Schwitters and the Hawaii men's tennis team came from behind to defeat Oklahoma 6-1 yesterday at the UH tennis complex for Schwitters' 800th win in men's tennis. In 36 years of coaching, the Warrior coach has amassed an 800-393-8 record and the NCAA's best combined men's and women's record at 1,258-552-8.

"It was a great day for the kids and a good win over a good program," Schwitters said. "That's kind of the things that we hope to do and the things they are proud of when they do it."

Schwitters didn't gush about the milestone victory but how was it was won. After losing two of three doubles matches to give the Sooners (5-5) the doubles point, the Warriors (11-6) swept all six singles matches.

"After the doubles, I brought them in again and just said don't get down on yourselves," Schwitters said. "They didn't really beat you. We made the mistakes, we beat ourselves. There's still six points out there and if we really want them, we can go get them."

And they did yesterday as Malina Oda, the No. 3 singles, started the sweep with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Ollivier Monferran. With three matches to go, Francisco Brignole won a 6-4, 6-4 decision against Matt Ogle in No. 4 singles to nail win No. 800 for Schwitters.

No. 1 Seasiders defeat No. 3 Sea Warriors: Top-ranked Brigham Young-Hawaii defeated third-ranked Hawaii Pacific 6-3 yesterday in Laie. The Seasiders rallied from a 2-1 deficit after the doubles matches and won five of six singles matches for the win.

The Seasiders were without the services of Peter Madarassy, the ninth-ranked player in the nation, who flew to Hungary to be with his ill father.

Hawaii Pacific sweeps Brigham Young-Hawaii

Jamie Reyes went 3-for-4 with three RBIs as the Hawaii Pacific softball team swept Brigham Young-Hawaii 6-2 and 10-1 yesterday at Kaneohe.
