Musashimaru keeps
sole lead at 10-0

Kaio suffers second defeat

OSAKA, Japan (AP) -- Hawaii-born yokozuna Musashimaru kept the sole lead at 10-0, but his closest rival ozeki Kaio suffered his second upset defeat on Tuesday, the 10th day of the 15-day Spring Grand Sumo Tournament.

Ozeki Tochiazuma, seeking promotion to sumo's highest rank of yokozuna, also suffered his third defeat.

Musashimaru is now chased by Kaio and No. 11 maegashira Takanowaka at 8-2 and three wrestlers -- Tochiazuma, ozeki Musoyama and No. 6 maegashira Aminishiki -- at 7-3.

In the day's final bout at the Osaka Prefectural Gymnasium, Musashimaru charged No. 5 maegashira Otsukasa with a series of hand thrusts and sent him out, leaving Otsukasa at 6-4.

No. 4 maegashira Akinoshima charged Kaio with an arm throw attempt and pulled him down for his fourth victory against six defeats.

Sekiwake Kotomitsuki fought off Tochiazuma's initial charge, grabbed his foe's belt, lifted him up and sent him out for his sixth victory against four defeats.

Tochiazuma won the last tournament in January and can be promoted to yokozuna if he wins this tournament.

Takanowaka charged No. 10 maegashira Tochisakae's belt tightly and forced him out, leaving Tochisakae at 3-7.

In other major bouts, Musoyama pushed down No. 5 Toki who tried to pull him down in the initial charge. Toki is 6-4.

Ozeki Chiyotaikai attacked No. 3 maegashira Kyokushuzan with hand thrusts against the throat and bulldozed him out for his sixth victory against four defeats. Kyokushuzan, or Mongolian Batbayar Davaa, is 1-9.

Mongolian Sekiwake Asashoryu, or Dolgorsvren Dagvadrj, dodged komusubi Takanonama's driving attempt skillfully and sent him out from behind for his sixth victory against four defeats. Takanonami is 5-5.

No. 2 maegashira Kyokutenho, or Mongolian Tsevegynyam Nyamjav, twisted down equally-ranked Kotonowaka, leaving both wrestlers at 3-7.
