Rochelle Taylor, left, and Laura Friedeberg braved cold, gusty north winds yesterday morning at the Nuuanu Pali Lookout. Taylor is from Honolulu, and Friedeberg is visiting from Oakland, Calif. It will be windy and cool through the middle of the week, according to Roy Matsuda, lead forecaster at the National Weather Service in Honolulu. The temperature will drop to the mid-60s at night and rise to the mid-70s in the daytime through tomorrow. In the latter part of the week, sunny and clear weather is expected to return with temperatures in the 80s, Matsuda said. There were wind gusts of up to 50 mph in some areas yesterday. Matsuda said the wind speed will slowly ease as the week goes on.

Kris Kristofferson and Willie Nelson were among the entertainers volunteering their talent Saturday night at a benefit concert on Maui for heart transplant patient Daphne Kawaiaea, 11. The rock group Styx also sang several songs. More than 2,500 people were undaunted by the rain and mud at Oskie Rice Arena, where a rodeo was held, followed by the concert under a big tent. Daphne, who is staying near the Stanford Medical Center in California, called by telephone to thank everyone and to say she missed Hawaii. To make a contribution, call Roxanne Prito on Maui at 808-575-2836.
