The suspect in Saturday's shooting of a Kapahulu pawn shop owner has been released from the hospital and is in police custody, police said today.

The 34-year-old man faces charges of attempted murder, being a felon in possession of a firearm and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, according to Honolulu police. He also faces other possible firearm violations and drug charges.

Police said the man entered GH Camera Pawn & Gold Exchange at 936 Kapahulu Ave. just before 4 p.m. Saturday and shot the shop owner in what they described as a botched robbery.

The shop owner, a 52-year-old Pearl City man, retreated to the back of the shop, where he struggled with the suspect. Police said the suspect shot the victim again as the shop owner was attempting to escape through the back of the store.

The shop owner was taken to Queen's Medical Center in critical condition with gunshot wounds to his chest and side. He remained in critical condition last night.

The suspect was caught behind a home on Kihei Place near the Market City Shopping Center, said police, who also recovered a 9 millimeter handgun. He also was taken to Queen's in serious condition with injuries suffered in the struggle. His condition improved and hospital official released him to police.
