HILO >> The Hawaii-Hilo Vulcans had not won consecutive games from the Hawaii Rainbows since 1984 and had never done it here. Hilo takes pair from UH
From staff and wire services
Until yesterday.
The Vulcans defeated the Rainbows twice, winning Friday night's suspended game 10-9 in the bottom of the 12th inning and taking the regularly schedule game 6-4 at Francis Wong Stadium.
Robert Shimabuku and Daniel Lockett limited UH (7-14) to six hits in the second game.
Hawaii-Hilo improves to 6-25-1 and the six victories are one more than the Vulcans had all last season.
"I don't know if you can come up with anything positive with the way we've played the last three weeks with the possible exception of last Friday and Saturday," UH coach Mike Trapasso said.
"(Starter) Chris (George) battled, but they got the big hit and the story of our season continues where we couldn't generate anything offensively. We're at rock bottom and now we have to see if we can climb out of it.
"The only time we score runs is when we get a lot of help. We're struggling to even hit the ball in batting practice."
The Vulcans got on the board in the first inning after George fanned the first two batters.
Johnny Dudoit walked on a 3-1 pitch, moved to second on Nalei Sooto's single to deep short, and scored on Keola Park's single to right.
The Rainbows wasted an opportunity compliments of the Vulcans in the top of the fourth inning.
Hawaii-Hilo scored again in the bottom of the fourth when Chad Agustin and Ryan Hanohano singled to start the inning. Agustin took third on a wild pitch and scored when Kaliko Oligo lined George's first pitch through the hole into left field.
Hawaii finally scored in the sixth with some help from the Vulcans. Lane Nogawa doubled over Doug Nassimbene's head in left field, just the Rainbows' second hit. Scooter Martines walked on four pitches. Nogawa stole third and scored when Hilo second baseman Agustin's throw to first was wild as he tried to complete a double play on Derek Honma's grounder to third.
Hilo got to George big time in the bottom of the sixth.
Hanohano walked and took second on Sean Tamura's single to right. Daniel Rhodes then walked, loading the bases. Following a mound visit, Oligo hit George's first pitch over Kevin Gilbride's head in right for a three-run triple. Nassimbene followed with a first-pitch sacrifice fly to center, scoring Oligo and giving the Vulcans a 6-1 lead.
The Rainbows showed signs of life in the seventh when Brian Bock and Brent Cook drew two-out walks and Gilbride singled to right, loading the bases.
Hilo coach Joey Estrella brought Lockett in to face Nogawa, who walked to force Bock home. Martines sent Gilbride and Nogawa home with a single to left, but Lockett ended the inning by getting Honma on a called third strike.
The Vulcans needed just two batters to win Friday night's suspended game.
Sean Yamashita started in relief of Matt Le Ducq. There were two outs and Hilo's Darren Chu was at the plate with a full count. Chu fouled off the first pitch from Yamashita, then drew a walk.
Dudoit, who hit a three-run homer in the eighth inning to tie the game at 9, took a strike. Then, with Chu running, Dudoit lined a double into the left-center field alley that easily scored Chu with the winning run.
"People told me you can forget Hilo's record when these teams play," said Trapasso before the game.
The UH coach said he is going to have to evaluate what he is doing. The offensive woes are not a physical problem.
"Obviously, I'm not doing something, because I'm not able to get our guys out of this," Trapasso said.
Notes: Nate Jackson made his 2002 debut for UH and was 2-for-4. ... The Rainbows have lost nine of their last 11 games.
