Ceremonies at Marine Corps Base Hawaii in Kaneohe yesterday formally dedicated the new Pacific War Memorial at the base. Iwo Jima veterans Jack Rasmussen, left, and Charles Beidleman, shown reflected in the memorial, were swapping stories of their World War II experience prior to the ceremonies. The memorial features a likeness of the historic Joe Rosenthal photograph of the second Iwo Jima flag-raising on Feb. 23, 1945. Medals of Honor were awarded to 27 Marines and sailors for their bravery during the conflict, more than in any single battle in American history.

Volunteers gathered yesterday for Waimanalo's 2002 Spring Clean-up. Backhoe operator Tim Miexell, foreground, and Arthuro Jones, background, hauled away a portion of the tons of junk collected around Waimanalo on Waikapunaha Road. It was part of a massive community cleanup effort with people like Miexell donating help with heavy machinery.
