The 11th annual Goodwill Industries of Hawaii Fund-raising Auction, celebrating the agency's centennial anniversary, earned more than $52,000. The auction was held last month at the Hilton Hawaiian Village.

For 100 years Goodwill has offered occupational skills training and career development services for people with disabilities, welfare dependency, lack of work experience and other barriers to employment throughout the nation.

Community businesses donated items, which were bid on during a silent auction. A live auction included an aerial tour with Buzz Bennett, a Hard Rock Cafe leather jacket, items from local artists, and valuable items found in Goodwill stores.

In Hawaii, last year Goodwill served more than 2,200 people and reported $10.2 million in revenues. Under Goodwill, 700 people were placed into employment last year. The agency channels more than 90 percent of its revenues into programs and services.

Honokaa man rescued off cliff side after crash

HILO >> A 35-year-old man was rescued from a cliff-side tree yesterday morning, about 11 hours after driving a pickup truck off the 300- to 400-foot cliff along the Waipio Valley access road, Big Island police said.

John Richard Davis of Honokaa landed in the tree about 100 feet above a beach where the truck crashed Friday night, pinning a 44-year-old man in the passenger seat, Sgt. Samuel V. Jelsma said.

The unidentified passenger was pronounced dead early yesterday morning at Hilo Medical Center.

An initial search failed to locate Davis, but rescuers returned at daybreak and heard him yelling and whistling from the tree, Jelsma said.

Rescue personnel rappelled down the side of the cliff, and a helicopter was used to pluck Davis from the tree and fly him to the hospital, he said.

Davis was listed in guarded condition after being treated for a broken leg and bruises.

The pickup was overtaking another vehicle when it climbed an embankment and dropped off the cliff, Jelsma said.

Witnesses told police the pickup was traveling recklessly at a high rate of speed up the road just before the accident, he said.
