"Tsunami Man -- Learning About Killer Waves With Walter Dudley," by Anthony D. Fredericks (University of Hawaii Press, $12.95)Educator Fredericks has assembled an easily digested package giving younger readers an idea as to what drives one tsunami scientist, who wants to save lives from the unpredictable wash of killer waves. The volume is liberally illustrated with colorful, dramatic stories and case histories, and dozens of photographs and a few informational graphics. The cartoonish cover, however, is too influenced by Hokusai's "Great Wave" illustrations and not by an actual tidal wave.
"Little World -- A Book About Tolerance," by Joanna F. Carolan (Banana Patch Press, $14.95)This work is both written and illustrated by Carolan and is top-notch, subtle propaganda, but what children's book isn't? Here, the world is made up of square, round, triangular and rectangular people who need to get along. It's clever and thought-provoking.
