Bloch dives into NCAAs
while Gowdy still waitsCheyne Bloch earned the Hawaii swimming and diving team's first spot in the NCAA championships yesterday when his times in the 100- and 200-meter breast stroke events were judged among the top 20 in the nation at Stanford yesterday.
Bloch will be seeded 16th in the 100 meters and 17th in the 200-meter championships to be held March 28-30 in Athens, Ga. It will be the sophomore's first appearance at the elite meet.
Fellow sophomore Mike Gowdy finished fifth in the one-meter dive and has one more chance today to reach the championship.
Vulcans shut down Western New Mexico
The Hawaii-Hilo softball team became the last unbeaten sqad in the Pacific West Conference after shutting out Western New Mexico 1-0, 1-0 in a doubleheader at Hilo yesterday.Tara Martinez and Kristine Kahoalii threw shutouts for Hilo (18-3, 8-0) against WNMU (13-7, 4-2).

Kalani product Shane Komine struck out 14 Aggies in eight innings, as the No. 11 Nebraska baseball team improved to 9-5 overall and 2-2 in the Big 12 with a 6-4 win over No. 13 Texas A&M yesterday.He upped his season record to 4-0, scattering three hits.
Wahine whip Whitman in collegiate tennis
The Hawaii women's tennis team beat Whitman College 7-0 yesterday at the UH tennis courts.Lauren Fitzgerald, Stacy Hakikawa and Polina Kravets all beat Whitman's top three singles players without dropping a set.
The UH men's tennis team won for the seventh time in eight matches, sweeping past Navy 6-0.
Malino Oda, No. 3 in singles, continued to roll, beating Chris McGrath 6-0, 6-2. The junior has won four of his last five singles matches and has paired with Lincoln Leeder to win the past three doubles contests.
The Warriors (8-6) play a doubleheader on Monday, against Wisconsin-Green Bay and Idaho.
