UH tennis team
defeats Radford


Hawaii beat Radford, Va., 4-0 yesterday at in men's tennis at the UH Tennis Complex to extend its winning streak to five.

The Warriors improved to 7-5 after their third straight sweep.

The Rainbow Wahine (2-10) tennis team lost to Northern Illinois 4-3. Erica Heshelman beat UH's Polina Kravets 3-6, 7-6, 7-5 to give Northern Illinois the win.

UH divers fall short at zone championships

Hawaii divers failed to qualify for the NCAA Championships yesterday, but they have another opportunity today.

Sophomore Mike Gowdy was UH's highest finisher at the NCAA Zone E Diving Championships at Stanford University. Gowdy placed 11th in the men's 3-meter dive with a 457.05. Jon Coyle posted a 425.30 to finish 15th.

Both will compete in today's 1-meter event. Gowdy is also entered in the platform tomorrow.

UH's Maggie Roberts finished 20th in the 1-meter with a 227.35. She's in the 3-meter today.

Wong, Metzger hit Waikiki Beach

Olympians and Punahou graduates Kevin Wong and Stein Metzger headline the Waikiki Invitational, an international beach volleyball tourney today through Sunday with matches from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Mili gets new contract

KIRKLAND, Wash. >> The Seattle Seahawks signed tight end Itula Mili to a multiyear contract yesterday.

Terms were not disclosed.

Mili, a five-year veteran from BYU and a graduate of Kahuku High School, was originally drafted by Seattle in the sixth round of the 1997 NFL draft.

He has 41 catches for 430 yards and six touchdowns during his career. He started 13 of the 55 games he's played.

Other free-agent signees this offseason for Seattle were wide receiver Bobby Engram and quarterback Trent Dilfer.

Top performers

Melissa Marquez, Chaminade softball: The senior right-hander is leading Chaminade's return to the top of the PacWest conference standings, having beaten beat both Hawaii Pacific and Brigham Young-Hawaii last week in a pair of complete-game, one-run victories. She provided some offense of her own as well, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs against the Seasiders. She leads the conference in innings.

Kellie Taguchi, Brigham Young-Hawaii tennis: Taguchi has not lost a set since March 11, sweeping Molly Figel of Butler 6-0, 6-0 and Juri Otsuka of Westmont 6-3, 6-0. She has been just as dominating in doubles, teaming with Tomoko Sukegawa to sweep their opponents 8-0 twice last week.
