Wahine basketball game
to be shown live on KFVE


The Hawaii Women's National Invitation Tournament basketball game today will be broadcast live on KFVE-TV.

The Rainbow Wahine (23-7) are in Corvallis, Ore., to take on Oregon State (16-14) in the first round of the WNIT.

The game starts at 5 p.m. Hawaii time.

Bob Akamian and Cathy Nelson will call the game for KFVE.

If the Wahine win, they will face Oregon (18-13) at a yet-to-be determined site.

Vulcans and Lions split doubleheader

The Hawaii-Hilo softball team split a doubleheader with Vanguard yesterday, taking the first game 5-4 before losing 3-2.

Diana Kim and Trisha Holley knocked in a pair of runs in the sixth to give the Vulcans a 5-3 lead in the first game. Taysha Anderson (6-1) scattered 10 hits in pitching a complete game.

In the second game, the Lions (23-10-1) scored twice in the seventh for the win.

Holley had three hits on the day for Hilo (17-4), which plays a pair of doubleheaders against Western New Mexico (13-5-1) tomorrow and Saturday at the UHH softball field.

Prather repeat choice for academic honor

Senior Hilo guard Scott Prather has been named to the Pacific West Academic All-Conference team for the second straight year.

Prather, from Kula, Maui, has a 3.88 GPA. He was selected to the PacWest first team earlier in the month.

Also making the PacWest academic team from Hawaii were Brian Skinner (3.60 GPA, Brigham Young-Hawaii), John Kirk (3.34, Chaminade)and Larz Stewart (3.38, Hawaii Pacific).

Seasiders continue season-long win streak

The Brigham Young-Hawaii women's tennis team won its 10th straight match yesterday in convincing fashion.

The Seasiders (10-0) beat Butler 7-0 as Kellie Taguchi and Tomoko Sukegawa each won 6-0, 6-0 in singles. Then they paired up to sweep their doubles opponents 8-0.

BYUH faces Hawaii Pacific on March 19.

Vulcans win twice: The Hawaii-Hilo men's and women's teams beat Whitman 9-0 yesterday.

The Vulcans won every set. Karl-Johan Moritz needed a tiebreaker to edge Trevor Gamble 6-1, 7-6 in No. 2 men's singles.

No. 3 Stacey Kneese got past Selima Serna 7-5 in the first set before rolling 6-0 in the second for the women.

The Hilo women meet Northern Illinois today.

UH wins second straight: The Hawaii Wahine beat Butler 5-2 on Tuesday for their second consecutive win after starting the season 0-9.
