Musashimaru wins
but Chiyotaikai stumbles
at spring sumo

OSAKA, Japan (AP) - Hawaiian yokozuna (grand champion) Musashimaru remained undefeated but ozeki (champion) Chiyotaikai suffered his first loss on Tuesday, the third day of the 15-day Spring Grand Sumo Tournament.

Musashimaru, or Fiamalu Penitani, got a left-hand grip on Kotonowaka's belt in the final bout at Osaka Prefectural Gymnasium and drove the No. 2 maegashira out over the straw ridge to improve to 3-0. Kotonowaka dropped to 1-2.

Chiyotaikai, who is hoping a strong performance in the spring tourney will earn him promotion to sumo's highest rank, was tripped up when top maegashira (senior wrestler) Tosanoumi got both hands around the head of the yokozuna hopeful and hauled him down for his second win.

In other major bouts Tuesday, Tochiazuma, also bidding for promotion to yokozuna, remained undefeated with a convincing victory over winless No. 2 maegashira Kyokutenho, or Mongolian Tsevegynyam Nyamjav.

Ozeki Kaio also remained perfect at 3-0 when he got a hold of Takanonami's belt and dispatched the komusubi (junior champion second class) with a textbook arm-throw. Takanonami fell to 1-2.

Ozeki Musoyama, who defeated sekiwake (junior champion) Kotomitsuki on Monday, looked impressive again Tuesday when he pulled Tochinonada down at the center of the ring to pick up his second win. Tochinonada, a No. 3 maegashira, is still looking for his first win.

Earlier, Kotomitsuki won by default over top maegashira Buyuzan, who was forced to pull out of the spring tourney because of damaged ligaments in his right knee.

No. 3 maegashira Kyokushuzan, or Mongolian Batbayer Davaa, drove out eighth-ranked maegashira Miyabiyama to give both wrestlers a record of 1-2. Sekiwake Asashoryu, or Mongolian Dolgorsvren Dagradji, was muscled out by komusubi Wakanosato for his second defeat. Wakanosato improved to 2-1.
