Sheri Oronoz continued her dominating performance in the Chevron Malihini Softball tournament yesterday, beating Oregon State 2-1 in nine innings to help the Wahine win the championship. Oronoz puts the clamps
on Oregon State for titleHawaii (18-12) stole the game in extra innings when Stacie Hirano, placed on second to start the inning, took third on a passed ball by Traci Feldt then scored when Monica Hoffman uncorked a wild pitch on her next offering to lose the game for the Beavers (24-9).
The Wahine erased the Beavers' courtesy runner in the bottom of the inning when Shelly Prochaska grounded out to shortstop Kate Judd and first baseman Stacey Porter followed it up by catching Miranda Dellinger trying to advance to third.
Oronoz (11-5) went all nine innings for the Wahine, giving up five hits and no walks.
Oronoz was named the outstanding pitcher of the tournament, and Prochaska was selected the most outstanding player.
Regucera, Duran move up UH's list
The Hawaii swimming and diving team did not have any automatic qualifiers in its last home meet of the season yesterday, but did have two swimmers jump into the school's top 10 list.Freshman Stephanie Regucera moved up to seventh- fastest in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 54.87 and fellow freshman Hugo Duran rose to sixth in the 100-yard freestyle with a finish of 47.68.
No. 1 Stanford brings down Wahine
The Hawaii women's water polo team was blown out of the water by No. 1 Stanford 13-4 at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex yesterday.Stanford (11-0, 2-0 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) scored four goals in the first quarter and won even though No. 12 Hawaii (7-6, 1-3) held the Cardinal to a single goal in the second. Stanford outscored Hawaii 8-3 in the second half.
Vulcans lose again, swept by Santa Clara
Leadoff hitter Kaliko Oligo banged out four hits, but the Hawaii-Hilo baseball team wasted them, losing 7-2 and 7-3 at Kailua-Kona yesterday.The Vulcans fell to 4-25-1, while the Broncos improved to 9-13.
Jeremiah Wolske lost the first game by giving up four earned runs in 3 1/3 innings, and Daniel Lockett went seven innings but lost the second game by also giving up four earned runs.
Chaminade, HPU split in softball
Melissa Marquez held Hawaii Pacific to two runs to salvage a doubleheader for Chaminade yesterday at Kaneohe.The Sea Warriors (10-6, 4-2) won the first game 3-2, and the Silverswords (12-10, 7-3) won the second by the same score.
Tascha Berinobis drove in two runs to give Jessica Parra the win for HPU in the first game.
Marquez took over the second game for the Silverswords, scattering seven hits with no walks. She also went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored.
