Learn the Japanese way
Author Andrew Horvat will discuss his new book, "Japanese Beyond Words: How to Walk and Talk Like a Native Speaker," at 7:30 a.m. Wednesday during a breakfast program sponsored by the Japan-America Society of Hawaii. The talk will take place in the Plaza Club's Pacific Room.Horvat is a Tokyo-based writer, broadcaster and Asian Foundation representative who has 30 years of experience living and working in Japan. In his book he covers the intricacies of Japanese cultural and social etiquette.

Learn practical self-defense techniques with Reggie Palma from 6 to 8 p.m. tomorrow.Palma, a third-degree black belt in the Filipino martial art kali-silat, presents methods to increase situational awareness and self-confidence. Rubber duckies to run
Twenty thousand rubber duckies will swim the Ala Wai Canal during the 15th annual Great Hawaiian Rubber Duckie Race and Festival, March 23. The race begins at 12:30 p.m. at the McCully Shopping Center and ends at the Kalakaua Avenue bridge. Proceeds benefit the United Cerebral Palsy Association.Prizes include the last-place "Lame Duck" award and a $10,000 prize for the 15th-place duck.
Pre-race activities begin at 9 a.m. at McCully Shopping Center, including keiki games, entertainment and an array of duck paraphernalia at the "duckie store."
Adopt a duck for as little as $5 by calling the UCPA Duckie Line at 532-6744 or going online at www.ucpahi.org. A $20 Quack Pack includes a Duckie T-shirt, but entries must be received by Friday.
