Oronoz puts Hawaii in final

Sheri Oronoz took care of the hitting and pitching yesterday. She only needed her Hawaii softball teammates to take care of the defense.

And the Wahine did, not committing an error in two victories at the Malihini Tournament at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

UH beat Loyola Marymount 6-2 behind Oronoz's performance, then drubbed New Mexico State 9-2 to head into the tournament championship with a 17-12 record.

Oronoz pitched all seven innings in the first game, giving up two runs on two hits and no walks. She also drove in half her team's runs with a home run to left center field in the second inning. She was 2-for-4.

The last four batters in Hawaii's order went 7-for-14.

Ordonoz went deep again in the second game, driving in three runs on a three-run homer in the final inning to support starting pitcher Melissa Coogan.

The Wahine continue the tournament today at noon against the winner between New Mexico State and Oregon State earlier.

Wahine drop home opener in water polo

The Hawaii women's water polo team dropped its home opener with an 8-5 loss to San Jose State last night at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.

Beth Novick and Chelsea Garner-Prohs scored early in the third period to pull the Wahine within two goals, but UH could get no closer. Novick led the Wahine with three goals.
