Lanterns are used in the Kanto Festival in Akita City in the Akita prefecture in Japan. The festival is a time for the cleansing of evil spirits and praying for a rich autumn harvest. The group "Akita-Shi Kanto-Kai" showed off the lanterns yesterday at the Honolulu Festival, which will conclude tonight with a parade down Kalakaua Avenue.
