The Story of Koloa -- A Kauai Plantation Town, by Donald Donohugh (Mutual, $18.95)

This extraordinary, handsomely produced volume, courtesy designer Sistenda Yim, is also a revealing look at a Hawaii community often overlooked, a wide spot in the road on the flanks of southern Kauai. This is ironic, because the first written accounts of contact with Hawaiians were with the natives of Koloa paddling out to greet Cook's ships. It is also the place where sugar-cane plantations first sprouted in the islands. Donohugh caps his historical narrative with a guide to historic structures still remaining in Koloa. Contains useful maps.

Mahalo My Love, by Ida Hills (Beagle Bay Books, $14.95)

This is a straightforward bosom-heaver -- "his hips moved with hers in a rhythm more ancient than the hula" -- in which beautiful Hawaiian girl Laelani -- that's the way it's spelled here -- fiery English girl Amy and handsome Texan Clifton smolder in each other's presence for many pages. The story takes place during the overthrow of the Queen. Author Hills is clearly fond of Hawaii and gets most local things right, but who's paying attention? The bodice buttons are flying off!
