NEW Liquor Commission Chairman Pete Donahoe was given his badge last week and told to pin it in his wallet. Said Pete, "If I pin it in my wallet, it's too bulky. There's no room for my credit cards." An old-timer around City Hall replied, "If you've got that badge, you don't NEED credit cards." (March 12, 1969) ... Quite a lineup of notables here to address the Young Presidents convention at the Hawaiian Village through Saturday. To name a few: Noah Dietrich (who worked for years as Howard Hughes' right hand, and recently wrote a book about him -- the one Clifford Irving borrowed liberally from when it was in manuscript form and tried to pass it off as Hughes' autobiography), Mary Wells Lawrence (highest-paid ad person in the business), R. Buckminster Fuller (think of him when you look at the Hilton Dome), Dr. Albert Sabin (discoverer of the polio vaccine that's named after him) and Hawaii's own renaissance woman, Claire Boothe Luce. give his badge enough creditTHE TV set that KGMB donated to the zoo so the gorillas could watch has blown its picture tube, but the station is replacing the set. As Channel 9 Program Director Phil Arnone put it in a memo to the chief engineer, "You know how the apes hate to miss their soaps." It's amazing how people-like the gorillas are in that respect. PUNAHOU junior Pamela Loo is going to be the most envied girl on campus after she is whisked off to the Academy Awards celebration in Hollywood as the guest of a major studio president and rubs elbows with the likes of John Travolta and dozens of other stars. She's representing her grandfather, Sir Run Run Shaw, the Hong Kong moviemaker who was knighted last week by Queen Elizabeth II. Pam, who wants to be a film editor one day, is the daughter of Dean Witter VP Paul Loo and Violet Loo. (March 15, 1979) ...
DR. Ken Cardoza, dentist to the stars, and his artist-wife, Penny, brought along a copy of a Peter Mintun album for the pianist to autograph at the Prince Kuhio's Ginger Lounge last week. They explained that when they went to Europe recently, they took movies and put a soundtrack to it, featuring music by three people: Mintun, Bobby Short and Vera Lynn. All of them, it turns out, have been in Hawaii in the past two weeks. (March 16, 1980) ... Back from New York where he accepted a handsome gold medal from the prestigious National Arts Club is UH professor Leon Edel. The New York Times, in its report on the presentation, showed that even that grand old paper can be behind the times -- it has him still teaching in New York although he's been here for 12 years. HITTING a hole-in-one is a rarity, but Blood Bank President Julia Frolich carded one during her recent Far East tour with a group of 40 other islanders, which is really rare. Her ace came at the Awana Golf Club in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and it happened on a par-4 hole! Granted it was only 297 yards long and she was shooting from the women's' tees, but it's still an accomplishment she'll treasure forever. (March 14, 1986) ... Big new job for Tom Rohr. He's been lured out of retirement by the Bass Brothers of Fort Worth and Ron Boeddeker to be president of the Waikoloa Land Co. He'll have some 31,000 acres to play with and build on, anchored by Chris Hemmeter's soon-to-open Hyatt Regency Waikoloa. (March 16, 1988) ... Some $17,000 was raised at the first-ever St. Francis Hospice Shoot-Out, a racquetball and squash tournament, but one $100 contribution made a big impression on the Hospice's Sister Francine. She ran into Tom Selleck at the tournament held at the Honolulu Club and presented him with a tournament T-shirt. When he returned the next day to work out, Selleck slipped Sister Francine a $100 bill. (March 13, 1992) ...
