Earl Hirakawa had been out of prison for barely a year when he was fatally shot late Wednesday night behind the wheel of a car traveling on Vineyard Boulevard.

Police have not arrested or identified any suspects.

The 40-year-old Pearl City man was serving a 10-year prison term for a 1998 burglary conviction when he was paroled on Feb. 17 last year.

His criminal record dates to 1983. The crimes for which he was convicted range from criminal contempt of court, to driving under the influence of alcohol, drug promotion, attempted assault and unauthorized entry into a motor vehicle, to burglary.

Hirakawa was hit in the head with a single blast from a shotgun near the corner of Vineyard Boulevard and Aala Street just before midnight Wednesday. He was taken in critical condition to the Queen's Medical Center, where he died two hours later.

Police are looking for a white or light-colored compact car that was either racing or chasing Hirakawa's car at the time of the shooting. Police also are looking for a tow truck driver who may have been in the area prior to the shooting.
