‘Mame’ and auction shine
at Diamond Head Theatre

EVERYONE is holding a silent auction these days, and Diamond Head Theatre is no exception. It'll take place along with the gala evening featuring "Mame" and has one item of particular interest to people with kids who like to dress up. Co-chair Mindy Tucker reports that Beth Worrall Daily has donated a treasure chest for kids to use in playing dress-up. It's filled with designer clothing --featuring the likes of Halston, Chanel and more, cut down to children's sizes. It's a unique auction item for those who aren't afraid to get their kids attuned to expensive dress ...

WE'VE had the Whiffenpoofs from Yale doing their a capella best in Hawaii over the years, but now another similar group from Yale is in town, this singing group consisting of women. Called Something Extra, the a capella group has been in existence since 1977 and on Wednesday they'll perform at Restaurant Row during lunchtime. One of the members has local collections -- Liz Conley, daughter of the Herb Conleys, is a Punahou grad who is a junior at Yale majoring in women's studies. Besides singing, Liz also performed hula on board the Star of Honolulu during her high school years ... Another Isle singer, tenor Keith Ikaia-Purdy returns from his international appearances to do a concert performance of Puccini's "Turandot." Maestro Sam Wong leads the Symphony and Chorus as soprano Mary Jane Johnson joins Purdy at the Concert Hall May 19 and 21 ... Harry Soria Jr. will salute the late Al Lopaka on his "Territorial Airwaves" show on KINE-FM Sunday afternoon. Lopaka was a delightful guy from Lanai who died in a polo accident at Mokuleia at the age of 42 ...

Radio daze

JAZZ buff Abe Weinstein hosted a radio show on KGU many years ago, so it was an easy thing for him to guest on jazz radio station KKSF while promoting the annual International Jazz Festival on Maui. The station was doing a live feed to San Francisco at the Outrigger Wailea Resort, and DJ Ray White was excited to hear about the jazz fest, which includes two nights on Maui this year, that he wants to come back and participate ...

THE UH Press people were thrilled to find that Hemispheres, the in-flight magazine of United Airlines, is featuring one of its books on the March cover. Folks flying on United this month can read all about "Tivaevae: Portraits of Cook Islands Quilting" by Lymsay Rongokea with photos by John Dailey ... Why did Iolani High's basketball team celebrate their perfect season at the Parc Cafe, you ask? Possibly because Parc GM Mark DeMello and Iolani coach Mark Mugushi share more than the same first name. The two were Iolani and Northwestern University classmates ...

TV classics

For years, a 1962 Emmy-nominated TV special featuring three greats -- Judy Garland, Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin -- was lost, but now it's been relocated in the archives of Sid Luft, Garland's former husband, and Hawaii has a chance to see it. "Judy, Frank and Dean in Concert" will air 7 p.m. Sunday on KHET-TV as part of Hawaii Public Television's March membership drive. The special was directed by Norman Jewison before his feature film career got underway ...
