A 42-year-old Pearl City man died after he was shot in the head while driving on Vineyard Boulevard late last night.

The shooting occurred about 11:50 p.m. at the corner of Vineyard Boulevard and Aala Street. Police are looking for a small white car that was on the road at the time of the shooting.

"We don't know if they were racing or one car was being chased by the other," said Lt. Bill Kato of the Honolulu Police Department's Homicide Detail.

Kato said both cars were moving at the time of the shooting. Witnesses told police they heard one gunshot. "They appeared to be picking up speed."

The victim's car then veered off the road and hit a tree.

The man was taken to Queen's Medical Center in critical condition and died at about 2 a.m., Kato said.

The Honolulu Medical Examiner did not release his name this morning.

Kato said the man had 81 prior arrests, mainly for property crimes such as burglary.

Although police had not done a complete search of the victim's car as of this morning, Kato said no weapons were visible inside the vehicle.

Police are also looking for a tow-truck driver who may have been in the area of Vineyard Boulevard, Nuuanu Avenue and Maunakea Street at the time of the shooting. Anyone with information is asked to call CrimeStoppers at 955-8300 or *CRIME on a cellular phone.
