In The Mix
Move over, Scrubs,
Ozzys in the houseEVER thought you'd want to watch a television series starring Ozzy Osbourne? Me neither. But after spending 30 minutes this week with "The Osbournes" on MTV, my Tuesday nights for the foreseeable future will now include tuning in to see what's happening with the 53-year-old founder of Black Sabbath and his family.
For the first few minutes of Tuesday night's premiere, I couldn't shake the idea that this guy was performing onstage years before I'd been born. There he was on my television, though, moving into a new Beverly Hills estate with wife Sharon, son Jack and daughter Kelly. Soon, Ozzy appears with a rifle, asking his wife where he should put it. "I'll just put it under the bed," he says, climbing up the stairs to the second floor with the rifle still cradled in his arms. OK ...
Over the next half-hour, we get to tag along as the family settles into its new home, join Ozzy as he makes an appearance on "The Tonight Show" and hear classic one-liners from family members like "I'm Ozzy Osbourne's wife -- now shut the (expletive) up and go to bed!" and "Don't smoke. Don't do drugs. And if you have sex, wear a condom."
There's no mistaking "The Osbournes" for a show like "Family Ties" or "The Cosby Show," that's for sure. It's obvious there's no script for the family to refer to, but watching Ozzy struggle with the satellite television remote as he tries to drink a Diet Coke is hilarious in its simplicity; there's just something silly about watching a tattoo-covered, middle-aged man sitting shirtless on his living room couch screaming for his son to come and help him.
I guess that's what makes this show so appealing -- viewers are given a chance to see what really goes on inside the home of a rock star and his family without the prying questions of a reporter or the concocted jokes of a script. We find out the Osbournes love each other, fight with each other and even curse at each other like any normal family would. And it's freaking funny, too.
"The Osbournes" airs at 8:30 p.m. Tuesdays on MTV. So much for "Scrubs," at least in my house ...
