Humane Society searches
for famous dog look-alikes

THERE'S a casting call out for celebrity look-alikes. No, not Elvis or Marilyn or Michael. The Hawaiian Humane Society is holding a black-tie fund-raiser April 13, cleverly called "Hooray for Hollywoof," and are looking for canines resembling Lassie, Toto, Rin Tin Tin, Benji and a few other dogs of Hollywood fame. The celebrity mutts are being invited for cocktails and puppy pupus only. If you think your pet has star quality, call Eve Holt at 946-2187 ...

YOU can get warmed up for St. Patrick's Day on Saturday when Don Murphy is holding the fifth annual Irish Fry with proceeds going to the Hawaii Children's Cancer Foundation. From 10 a.m., you can enjoy an authentic Irish breakfast or brunch feast featuring -- and I'm not bragging here -- the justly celebrated Donnelly's Sausages imported for the occasion, along with bangers, black and white pudding, garlic fried tomatoes, scrambled eggs, Irish soda bread and Murphy's traditional corned beef hash. You can make reservations by calling 531-0422. There is even a famous radio ad for Donnelly's Sausages written by Val Doonican. Sung to the tune of the "Mexican Hat Dance," of all things, it begins, "Yes it's true, it's the talk of the nation/This sausage amazingly new/So new that it's caused a sensation/And Donnelly's makes it for you."

MEANWHILE, Nuuanu and Merchant will be having its traditional St. Patrick's Day block party beginning on Friday, March 15, and running through the day itself. Murph has brought in 8,000 oysters for the occasion so by Christmas there may be a record number of births recorded ... When Murphy's gets too full, as it always does on Paddy's Day, there's always the friendly Irish pub across the street, O'Toole's ...

Meanwhile ...

PUBLICAN John Ferguson is bringing in fiddler Lisa Gomes from the disbanded Irish Hearts to play in the courtyard behind his pub in the Dillingham Transportation Building. Thousands more are expected to attend that block party, so drivers had best be forewarned about driving between those two venues ... There are sure to be other Irish bashes that weekend, but those two should be the best and brightest ...

HAWAII'S busiest auctioneer Marty McClain must just love banging his gavel, often for free. Last year he donated his services to 42 charities, peddling their goods without accepting a penny. On the other hand, he often does huge commercial auctions as well, most recently the auction of American Hawaii Cruises with more than 4,000 in attendance bidding on some 300,000 items ...

Carmen and Campbell

THE 3 hours and 20 minutes it took to stage "Carmen" went by very quickly Tuesday night and at least three Hawaii cast members with featured roles acquitted themselves well as principals. Quinn K. Kelsey, Georgine Stark and Mary Chestnut, take one more bow ... Glen Campbell will be making a rare orchestral performance with the Honolulu Symphony Pops on March 22 & 23. I recall the singer's first appearance in Hawaii as "Glen 'Boss Guitar' Campbell," backing up numerous one-hit wonders at a K-POI "Million Dollar Party" 40 years ago. He didn't sing a lick that night ...
