The Campbell High School cheerleaders placed 11th during yesterday's state championship at the Stan Sheriff Center yesterday.

Warriors, Na Alii top cheerers

There was plenty of high-flying action yesterday at the Stan Sheriff Center as the winners of the 2002 Local Motion state cheerleading championships were declared.

Kamehameha won the medium division with 11 or fewer team members, while Aiea shined in the five-team large division of teams with 12-18 members.

Kamehameha coach Dolly Wong guided the Warriors, who competed first and were a tough act to follow.

The Oahu Interscholastic Association dominated the medium division top 10, with five teams finishing no lower than seventh. Radford came in second, third went to Moanalua, while Mililani and Pearl City rounded out the top five finishers.

In the large division, Aiea -- coached by Liz Godinet -- defeated OIA rival Kailua (fourth) and Big Island Interscholastic Federation opponents Waiakea (second), Hilo (third), and Kealakehe (fifth).

Scores were not released to the media.

UH rebounds to defeat Eastern Michigan

A day after surrendering the most runs in school history, the Hawaii softball team recovered to handily beat Eastern Michigan, 7-3, in the Hillenbrand Invitational at Tucson, Ariz.

Sheri Oronoz pitched a complete game and scattered three hits as Hawaii's bats did most of the work.

The Wahine had 14 hits, and Oronoz helped her own cause with three hits and two runs batted in.

The Wahine did most of the damage early, scoring six runs in the first two innings. Stacey Porter doubled in Kate Judd and Stacie Hirano in the first inning.

Trisha Ramos led off the second with a double and scored on Oronoz's single to center. Jennifer Tandarich followed with another single that scored Oronoz.

The Wahine improved to 12-10 and host Loyola Marymount tomorrow at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

Smith, McGuire-Turcotte victorious in 10K

Hawaii track members Cheryl Smith and Casey McGuire-Turcotte captured their respective divisions yesterday in the Straub/Kapiolani Women's 10K.

Smith won the open division with a time of 35-minutes, 48 seconds.

Hawaii Pacific's Lisa Blomme came in second less than a minute later at 36:40.

In the 20-24 age bracket, McGuire-Turcotte finished almost three minutes ahead of the nearest competitor in 38:43.

Radford's Massey chooses Nevada

Radford guard Heather Massey has verbally committed to continue her basketball career at the University of Nevada.

Massey was an Oahu Interscholastic Association Western Division first-team all-star last season. She was also a Star-Bulletin honorable mention all-state selection.

Takata competes in Hungarian Cup

Taylor Takata finished fifth at the 2002 Hungarian Cup. The 2000 Iolani graduate won his first three judo matches by ippon (the equivalent of a knockout in boxing) to reach the semifinals of the 60-kilogram class.

He lost to Spain's Roberto Cueto in the semifinals but was defeated by Yoshimi Shimizu.
