Rainbows throw away
series with Anteaters

The Hawaii Rainbows began last night's game at Murakami Stadium with a batting lineup that underwent a vigorous shuffling by coach Mike Trapasso.

Before the new order could even be tested, the UC Irvine Anteaters took advantage of UH's shaky infield defense and scored five unearned runs in the top of the first inning. That set a negative tone for the Rainbows for the remainder of the game.

On the other hand, the Anteaters enjoyed themselves, winning their third three-game series of the year with a 12-5 victory before 1,145 fans. Brett Smith, a 6-foot-5 freshman righty, held the Rainbows in check for seven innings, scattering seven hits, walking two and fanning four.

A bright spot for Hawaii was the 5 1/3 innings of four-hit relief provided by Ricky Bauer. He walked no one, struck out four and the three runs scored during his stint on the mound were unearned.

"He was lights out, by far his best outing of the year. In the middle of a circus like this, it was good for Ricky and hopefully he can build on that," said UH coach Mike Trapasso, who took the team into tyhe locker room for a 44-minute meeting after the game.

The finale today starts at 1:05 p.m. Chris George (0-0) starts for UH while Paul French (1-3) takes the mound for UCI.

"For the last 10 days we've had some guys who have let the game come to them instead of forcing the action," said Trapasso, who played just about everyone on his roster.

"The good thing about that is we saw some guys come out with heart and passion who were willing to force the action."

Trapasso's juggling of the lineup was to get some pop in the bottom three spots.

"We've basically been playing six-inning games," he said.

The Anteaters' Jordan Szabo started the game by beating out a bunt toward third on Aaron Pribble's first pitch. On the next pitch, Matt Anderson also bunted toward third. UH third baseman Cortland Wilson, shifted from shortstop because Brent Cook took sick just before the game, fielded the ball but threw wildly past first base, putting Szabo and Anderson at third and second, respectively.

Chris Miller then grounded to Jason Carlson, making his first start of the season at shortstop. His throw to third in an attempt to get Anderson skipped past the bag as both runners scored and Miller ended up at second. Carlson had four errors in the game.

After a strikeout and a walk walk, Jaime Martinez singled to center, scoring Miller. Pribble then fanned Brett Dalton but walked Jon Horwitz and surrendered a two-run single to B.J. Eucce, giving UCI a 5-0 jump start.
