Kauai's Bruce Irons rode this wave en route to winning the Gotcha Pipeline title at Ehukai Beach yesterday. Irons has won three consecutive titles in his last three events at the world famous Banzai Pipeline.



UH divers take top 2 places

Sarah Farr and Maggie Roberts took the top two spots in three-meter diving, but the Hawaii Wahine remained in fifth place at the WAC championships in San Antonio yesterday.

Farr scored a 487.70 and Roberts had a 479.30.

Morgan Hoesterey qualified for the NCAA championships in the 100 breast and Katia Sarakatsani qualified in the 400 IM.

SMU is in first place, followd by Nevada, Rice and Fresno State. The WAC championships conclude today.

UH men in second: The UH men's team is in second place after two days of the National Independent Conference in Rochester, Mich.

SMU leads the meet with 613 points. UH is second with 397.

Mike Gowdy won the one-meter diving event and Cheyne Bloch won the 100 breast.

The UH team of Konstantin Dubrovin, Erik Lesnewsky, Bloch and Kurt Boehm qualified for the NCAA meet in the 800 free relay by placing second.

Arizona pitcher beats UH for 52nd straight win

Jennie Finch limited Hawaii to four hits and won her 52nd consecutive decision yesterday as Arizona beat UH 5-1 on the first day of the Hillebrand Invitational softball tournament.

Finch is 12-0 this season.

Sheri Oronoz (5-3) allowed 10 hits in a complete game for UH.

Trisha Ramos was 2-for-3 and knocked in Hawaii's only run in the second inning.

Vulcans win twice: Hawaii-Hilo beat Montana State-Billings 4-0 and 5-1 yesterday to improve to 4-0 in the Pacific West and 13-2 overall.

Michelle LaRose was 5-for-6 with three RBIs and Trisha Holley had three hits and three RBIs.

Seasiders make historic leap to No. 1 in nation

The Brigham Young-Hawaii men's tennis team moved into the top spot in the NCAA II national rankings for the first time in school history.

BYUH's victory over then-No. 1 Hawaii Pacific earlier in the week propelled the Seasiders (6-0) from the third spot to first. HPU (7-2) is No. 2.

"It's very early in the season to get too excited about it, but it is a nice reflection of the win over HPU," BYUH coach Dave Porter said.

The Seasiders women's team is ranked second in the women's poll. Lynn is No. 1.

Blast owner and GM to speak at QB Club

Nicole Wylie, owner, general manager and starting tight end for the Pacific Blast -- a new women's pro football team -- will speak at Monday's Quarterback Club luncheon at Pagoda.

Iolani athletic director Carl Schroers, who is also the HHSAA state wrestling coordinator, and Hawaii baseball coach Mike Trapasso will also speak.

Lunch begins at 11:30 a.m. and the program begins at noon.

The Sports Person-of-the-Month Committee will meet at 1 p.m. to select February's outstanding athletes.
