Irons rides high at Pipe



Kauai's Bruce Irons cruised to victory in the Gotcha Pipeline surf contest at Ehukai Beach on the North Shore yesterday.

It was Irons' third straight titles in his last three events at the world famous Banzai Pipeline break. He won the Gotcha Pipeline and the Xbox Pipeline Masters last year.

Australian Zane Harrison and Koby Abberton placed second and third, followed Hawaii's Jason Bogle in fourth.

UH's Dubrovin captures 500 freestyle in Oakland

Hawaii swimmer Konstantin Dubrovin won the 500-yard freestyle at the National Independent Conference Championships in Oakland, Calif., yesterday.

Dubrovin finished in 4 minutes, 25.70 seconds to finish seven-tenths of a second ahead Southern Methodist's Chris Epps.

Hawaii is in second place out of seven teams in the event, which ends tomorrow.

Brigham Young-Hawaii tennis teams triumph

Brigham Young-Hawaii defeated Chaminade 8-1 in both men's and women's tennis yesterday in Laie.

The Seasiders' Andrew Makarevich defeated the Silverswords' Lawrence Chan 7-5, 6-1 in the closest men's match.

BYUH's Leslie Miles won a hotly contested women's match, 6-4, 6-4 over Jeanne Parkinson.

Chaminade's lone men's victory was by default. Danica Hood and Parkinson picked up the Silverswords' only women's win, 8-4 over Miles and Jaime Porter.

Minvielle regatta this weekend

The A.E. "Toots" Minvielle Invitational Regatta is tomorrow and Sunday at 10:30 a.m. at Keehi Lagoon.

The canoe paddling event for ages 10-18 is run by Na Opio Canoe Racing Association and is sponsored the Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Foundation.

Top performers

Kashif Reyes, Chaminade basketball: The 5-foot-10 junior guard has carried the Silverswords back into the PacWest championship hunt, leading Chaminade to six wins in its last seven games. The Reading, Pa., native has averaged a team-best 17.2 ppg during the stretch and garnered conference Player of the Week honors on Tuesday.

Diana Kim, Hawaii-Hilo softball: The junior third-bagger from Renton, Wash., went 5-for-7 at the plate with a pair of RBIs to lift the Vulcans over Chaminade last weekend. She was named PacWest Player of the Week on Tuesday.
