ndaranciang@starbulletin.comA motorist called the Hawaiian Humane Society at 7:20 a.m. to report that the dogs were on the east-bound lanes of the freeway at the Punchbowl Street exit. Four minutes later another motorist reported that the dogs were at the Kinau Street exit. At 7:25 a.m. police called the Humane Society for assistance, said Eve Holt, Hawaiian Humane Society spokeswoman.
The dogs left the freeway and were tracked running through Makiki on Piikoi Street and Pensacola toward Roosevelt High School. The dogs then split up, with a police officer tracking one dog and a humane investigator tracking the other, Holt said. The dogs reunited at a home in Papakolea where a neighbor recognized the dogs, a pit-bull mix and a shepherd mix. The dogs' owners were not at home.
The humane investigator left a note at the home for the owners to contact the Humane Society after the neighbor secured the dogs.
"It's very important for people to secure their dogs properly. Not only are (loose dogs) a danger to themselves -- they're at risk of being hit by a car, they can also cause accidents as people try to avoid them injuring people," Holt said.
