The competition is being held in Gary, Ind.
Lighter, 25, is a Hawaii Pacific University student. Her parents are Riley Lighter and Natalie Takahashi.
If Lighter wins the pageant, she goes on to compete in the Miss Universe pageant, the title won by Hawaii's own Brooke Lee in 1997.
The 2002 Miss Hawaii Teen USA and 2003 Miss Hawaii USA competitions are still seeking entries.
To vie for Miss Hawaii USA, entrants must be between ages 18 and 26, single, a Hawaii resident or full-time student living in Hawaii.
Entrants for the Miss Hawaii Teen USA must comply with the same marital and residence rules but be between ages 15 and 18.
Winner goes on to the Miss Teen USA pageant.

'Hawaii's Young Voices'
Airing on Olelo Channel 52, four young Hawaii-born singers and one who has spent several years in the islands will be featured on "Hawaii's Young Voices." The half-hour show begins at 6 p.m. today with a repeat showing at 11 p.m. tomorrow.In Hawaii, as many as 100 young people at any given time are studying opera and classical voice. Many of these singers start in their early teens.
"Hawaii's Young Voices" exposes the classical voices of people ages 18 to 25. Enjoy the sounds of:
>> Quinn Kelsey: Baritone. Son of local singer and choir director Debbie Kelsey. University High School graduate and senior at University of Hawaii-Manoa. Student of John Mount. Performed in chorus and solo roles with the Hawaii Opera Theatre and is a soloist at Central Union Church. Recently awarded a Merola Program internship at the San Francisco Opera for summer 2002.
>> Megan Mount: Daughter of John Mount, professor of music at University of Hawaii-Manoa, and Lorna Mount, music teacher at Honolulu Community College. Kalaheo High School graduate and junior at UH-Manoa. She sings in the UH choir, with the HOT chorus, and as a Hawaiian music soloist at weddings.
>> Nicole Takesono: Graduate of Punahou School and Tufts University. Works for the Department of Pharmacology at the University of California at San Francisco. Sings in the chorus of Opera San Jose. Her first teacher was Vicki Gorman, adjunct music professor at BYU-Hawaii and a teacher at Punahou Music School.
>> Kanani Titchen: Daughter of Kathy and Jack Titchen. Graduate of La Pietra and Tufts. She is an actress and drama teacher in San Diego and continues to study opera while honing her acting and vocal skills with professional repertory theaters and teaching educational outreach classes.
>> Mark Boyle: Tenor. Connecticut native who came to Hawaii as an electronics technician with the U.S. Navy. Studied voice with Gorman. He has since been discharged from the Navy and returned to college at Ball State University in Muncie, Ind., where he is majoring in music.
