Eastside Grill hosts
a clash of island titans

ATTENTION all party people 21 and older in search of live island music and $3 Heinekens -- get your okole over to Manoa tonight. Head down to Eastside Grill for "Kanakapila Clash: The Finals," with Island Rhythm 98.5 night jock Bruddah Jake as the evening's host.

Over the past few weeks a number of local bands have been fighting it out for a chance to appear on stage in tonight's finals. Ocean 11 and Round 'n Round have made it this far, and the two bands face off for over $500 in cash and prizes. The winning band will also appear on Jake's radio show to talk about the contest and play a few songs.

Eastside Grill is located at Puck's Alley, a sentimental favorite for me since it's within crawling distance of home and there's always someplace serving ice-cold beer. Call 952-6555.

CAN'T get down to Manoa tonight? No worries -- I've got an idea for those of you on the Leeward side. While the clash of the bands rages on in town, head over to the Emporium Lounge in Aiea. TD Productions kicks off "Peaches and Cream Nites" with $2 drinks, prize giveaways and the always-popular Booty Contest.

Veteran club wax master Kool E will man the turntables and Mad Mo emcees at this 18-and-over party that starts at 9 p.m. Call 484-5757 for info and directions.

Party spot at Aloha Tower

FOR a while last year one of the trendiest places to party Friday night was "The Spy Bar" at John Dominis. In 2002, the promoters responsible for making that event happen have decided to set up shop at Aloha Tower Marketplace's Waterfront Cafe and Cabaret.

SOHO Promotions will open the doors at 11 p.m. tomorrow with what promoter Kevin Williams calls "an all-star lineup of talent." DJs G-Spot, Scottie Soul, Balance, and Stone Groove Family's G-Dogg will keep the two rooms bumping all night.

After tonight's grand opening festivities, SOHO Promotions will be back every Friday from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. Call 306-8963 for information.

New contract for Conan

RUMORS were circulating last month that "Late Night with Conan O'Brien" host Conan O'Brien would leave his NBC digs for more money and an earlier time slot.

Fans of Pimpbot 5000, Triumph the Insult Comic Dog and The Masturbating Bear (I'm not making these names up) don't need to worry; O'Brien signed a new four-year deal with the network worth a reported $8 million. That's double what the host had been making going into the show's ninth season last year.

NBC also agreed to begin repeating "Late Night" in an earlier time slot on a different network. This tactic should gain more viewers, and it'll give me a chance to see what I missed while working (or partying) the night before. Everyone's a winner ...

Out and about

THERE are still tickets available for two quality concerts this weekend. Tomorrow, Save Ferris takes the stage at World Cafe for an all-ages show starting at 7 p.m. Tickets are $17.50. On Saturday, Gregory Isaacs and Yellowman will headline "The Superstars of Reggae" at the Waikiki Shell. Ticket prices start at $22 at the door. Call 526-4400 to order by phone.

ON Saturday, the Kamehameha Schools' Teachers and Parents Association will hold its annual Ho'olaulea at Bishop Museum. Bring the family to this free event and check out food and game booths, a country store and live cultural demonstrations.

Local bands scheduled to perform include Na Leo Pilimehana, Sean Na'auao, the Opihi Pickers and the FM 100 All-Star Band. The Ho'olaulea runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and proceeds will benefit enrichment grants for Kamehameha students. A tip: Park free at the Kamehameha campus and catch a shuttle to Bishop Museum. Call 366-6275 for details.

Finally, I need to settle a little disagreement here. I'm not a wine drinker -- give me a cold mug and a pitcher of Deschutes Black Butte and I'm set. A friend thought that meant some sort of bias on my part against wine drinkers.

So in the interest of fairness, here's a wine tasting that even I am tempted to check out. Every Tuesday, Indigo Eurasian Cuisine holds a "Wrath of Grapes" night at the restaurant.

Join fellow grape juice drinkers (shoot, there's that bias again) as a different vendor stops by each week to share featured wines from the Indigo wine list. To keep you from getting too tipsy, fruit and cheese will be available to grind on with the wine. Call 521-2900 to register for next week's tasting.

THAT'S what's In the Mix for this week. Get at me via e-mail if there's something going on in your neighborhood ...
