UH moves to No. 2 in AVCA
coaches volleyball poll

Hawaii climbed one spot in the AVCA volleyball poll yesterday.

The Warriors are at No. 2 for the first time after beginning the season at No. 5 and steadily rising up the chart.

Hawaii earned the promotion by splitting with No. 10 Long Beach State over the weekend while then-No.2 Brigham Young split with No. 1 UCLA. Pepperdine settled into the fourth spot after losing to Pacific.

The Warriors received four first-place votes, while the Bruins led with six. Five teams received first-place votes, with Pepperdine getting three, BYU two and Penn State one.

Hawaii goes on a two-match road trip to Southern California this morning, playing the first game Friday and the next on Saturday. The Trojans are not ranked in the top 15 of the coaches poll.

Reyes, Kim named players of the week

Chaminade guard Kashif Reyes and Hawaii-Hilo third baseman Diana Kim were selected as men's basketball and softball players of the week, respectively, by the Pacific West Conference.

Reyes scored 22 points and recorded six rebounds in a win over first place Hawaii Pacific on Saturday. Reyes is currently the conference leader in free-throw percentage.

Kim's bunt single in the bottom of the seventh inning tied the game and sparked the Vulcans to a victory in the first half of a conference doubleheader against Chaminade on Saturday.

Roberts, Shepard among best WAC divers

Hawaii divers boast some of the season's most impressive Western Athletic Conference scores heading into the league's swimming and diving championships this weekend at San Antonio.

Rainbow Wahine Maggie Roberts' 233.20 in a championship meet is the best score in the WAC this season, while teammate Sarah Shepard owns the season's best mark in the 3-meter diving division.

Southern Methodist is the defending team swimming and diving conference champion.

Hilo inducts team into Hall of Fame

The 1981 Hawaii-Hilo volleyball team -- a team that won two national titles in a single season -- headlines the 10th annual City Bank/Vulcan Athletic Hall of Fame/University Distinguished Alumni ceremonies Saturday in Hilo.

The 1981 team, which won the NAIA championship in November and the Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women title in December, is joined by late Chancellor Edwin H. Mookini and 1980-1981 men's basketball captain Ia Saipaia as 2002 inductees.

Tickets to the event are $20 and include a ticket to Hilo's basketball game against Hawaii Pacific.
