Beanies boost
Red Cross



Ty Inc., makers of Beanie Babies, is introducing a new "America" bear to support local Red Cross relief efforts. All profits will be donated to buyers' local Red Cross chapters.

The "America" Beanie Baby may be purchased only online at www.ty.com. A previous blue "America" bear, has generated more than $1.1 million for the Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund.

The Hawaii State Chapter of the Red Cross responded to more than 120 disasters in 2001, providing individuals and families with food, clothing, shelter, grief counseling and more.

Sanabria is all that jazz

Bobby Sanabria and ¡Quarteto Ache! will bring its melding of Afro-Cuban, Puerto Rican and Brazilian jazz traditions to Orvis Auditorium for a 7:30 p.m. concert March 22.

For those who can't get enough of the rhythms, Sanabria will also lead a workshop, "Clave: The Key," in percussion technique, from 7 to 9 p.m. March 21. Fee is $25; to register call 956-8400.

Sanabria possesses the ability to hammer out at least four different rhythms simultaneously over his drum kit. His foundation is the five-beat rhythm of the clave as the key unlocking the roots of Afro-Cuban music.

Playing a variety of instruments, he takes audiences on a poly-rhythmic musical journey through history, tracing the slave route from the European colonization of Africa in the 15th century to the New World.

'Men Dancing' is back

"Men Dancing" returns to Hawaii Theatre March 9 and 10 with a lineup ranging from hula halau to the men of 24-VII DanceForce.

The concert is the third by Tau Dance Theater, designed to present top male performers who live, work or have roots in Hawaii, embracing all styles of dance.

Tau Dance Theater, under the direction of Peter Rockford Espiritu, will be joined by Halau O Kekuhi, Andrew Sakaguchi, Halau Hula Ke Kai o Kahiki, Austin Hartel (director of Dalton-Hartel Dance, New York City), Sami L.A. Akuna and Ben Arcangel.

30 breweries star at Kona bash

For the love of beer, 30 breweries and 25 restaurants will gather in Kona March 9. The seventh Kona Brewers Festival takes place 2:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the King Kamehameha Hotel.

Local and mainland breweries will serve up beers ranging from the lightest pilsners to the darkest stouts. And since you shouldn't drink on an empty stomach, plenty of food will be on hand. For educational purposes, brewers and chefs will discuss their specialties.

Entertainment will be by Voggy Mountain Ramblers, Lawakua and Dano. There will also be a Trash Fashion Show.

Tickets are $35 in advance, $40 at the door and include a mug, eight brew-tasting tickets and unlimited food samplings. Proceeds benefit the Tropical Reforestation & Ecosystem Education Center, He Kula Na Mea Hawaii, Chefs de Cuisine, Recycle Hawaii and the Aloha Brewers Guild. Shintani featured at fair

Dr. Terry Shintani, creator of the Hawaii Diet, leads a seminar based on his new book, "The Good Carbohydrate Revolution," at the Hawaii Dietetic Association's Nutrition, Health and Wellness Fair Saturday.

The seminar is the kickoff event of the festival at Ward Warehouse. It will be held at 9 a.m. in the Kewalo Conference Room; other exhibits and activities will be set up at the ewa end of Ward Warehouse from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Take advantage of body-fat analyses; glucose, cholesterol and kidney screenings; stroke-risk and lung-capacity assessments; yoga exercises; or have your medications reviewed by a pharmacist. Food samples, games and fitness demonstrations round out the free event.
