The biggest intrusion will occur this weekend on South King Street. The makai bus lane between Bethel and Richards streets will be ripped up and replaced from 7 p.m. Friday through midnight Sunday.
The work during that time, which will include the pouring of concrete, will effectively cut off access to two parking garages on the makai side of King between Bethel and Bishop streets, according to project spokesman Rodney Haraga.
The entire resurfacing will run through June and include reconstruction of old asphalt streets and the creation of curbs and ramps to comply with the Americans With Disabilities Act.
Meanwhile, beginning Monday, work will start on surfacing on North King Street from Liliha to River streets.
Haraga said the Honolulu Board of Water Supply has been putting in a water line there in recent months but will be done this week.
As is the case with the South King side, the resurfacing will be done sometime in June.
In both instances, Haraga said, at least two of the four lanes will be clear for traffic.
Royal Contracting, the general contractor, is slated to work weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and from 6:30 p.m. to 3 a.m. Work may also take place Sundays from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The two segments of work are part of the yearlong, $6.5 million King Street Rehabilitation Project, which is expected to be completed in July.
Bus stops affected by construction will be relocated temporarily. Information on such relocations will be posted at the affected construction sites.
