Former UH and Arizona football coach Dick Tomey is the name that keeps coming up first as a possible replacement for outgoing Hawaii athletic director Hugh Yoshida. Tomey, 63, told the Star-Bulletin yesterday that he might be interested in the job, but also that he hasn't given up on coaching. Tomey also said he enjoyed broadcasting UH games last year, and might continue to pursue that field. Tomey heads athletic
director candidatesBy Dave Reardon
dreardon@starbulletin.comOther potential candidates include:
>> Karl Benson: The Western Athletic Conference commissioner is familiar with Hawaii -- the state and UH. Benson is articulate and obviously has some connections in college athletics. Would he have to take a pay cut?
>> Jim Donovan: UH's associate athletic director has been Yoshida's closest assistant and has worked his way up the ladder at UH. But Donovan and assistant athletic directors Marilyn Moniz-Kaho'ohanohano and Teri Wilhelm Chang are not even guaranteed to keep their current jobs -- they were among UH midlevel managers given notice by the new administration that they might be let go.
>> Keith Amemiya: Everything he's touched as the Hawaii High School Athletic Association's executive director has turned to gold. But Amemiya lacks administrative experience at the college level.
>> Rockne Freitas: The Kamehameha Schools administrator and former All-Pro football player's name has often come up when top-level jobs at UH have opened up, including president and athletic director.
